I welcome you to the information page of the Department of Animal Science, University of Ibadan.
As the premier Department of Animal Science in the country and Centre of Excellence of the Nigeria Institute of Animal Science (NIAS), our Department has made significant contribution to livestock production in Nigeria. The Department’s teaching and research programmes are based on her vision, mission and philosophy which are in line with the vission and mission of the University and the Faculty of Agriculture:
Vision statement
To promote training in sustainable livestock production through demand driven and globally competitive research and development
Mission statement
To develop appropriate curricula for teaching and to promote collaborative and sustainable research with relevance to the national and global livestock industryTo set national livestock production standards for relevant organizations and agencies.
Philosophy
Livestock production is ever dynamic due to dynamism in human population and demand pattern for livestock and livestock productions. These shifts bring about changes in production systems.
The Department actively pursues this vision and remarkable successes have been achieved in areas of feed evaluation for poultry and swine, effects of gene/nutrition/environment interaction on reproduction in farm animals, application of in vitro gas production in the evaluating the feeding value of our forages for ruminants, value addition of animal products and application of fungal biotechnology for improving the nutritive value of high fibre feedstuffs. Our training program is made up of teaching and practical components. Students actively participate in farm and laboratory practicals and they are represented in the Departmental Farm Committee. Our postgraduate programme is well designed for adequate equipment of our graduating students. The Department is in active collaborative research and partnership with private farms, the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) and the International Farm Comparison Network (IFCN) through her Poultry Research Group (PRG) and Dairy Research Group (DRG). In the years ahead the Department hopes to make significant progress in research in evolving areas such as livestock production and environmental sustainability, impact of climate change on livestock production and organic agriculture.
